Contribution to CEREBRAD

Within the CEREBRAD project, the goal of ENEA is to evaluate changes in the cellular composition of the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus, and in the brain microenvironment of irradiated mice showing cognitive effects. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for GFAP (type I radial stem cells), Sox2 (type II non radial stem cells), PCNA (proliferating progenitors) and DCX (immature granule neurons) shows that the GFAP+ neural stem cells and PCNA+ proliferating progenitors are significantly targeted at doses ≥ 500 mGy. A chronic inflammatory response characterized by a significant increase of microglia (CD11b+) at 1000 mGy and by a significant increase in the number of astrocytes (GFAP+) in the hilus for doses ≥ 100 mGy was also detected.
