The Research Centre for Radiation Medicine, Kyiv is the first and unique research institution
in Ukraine was founded on October 1, 1986 after the Chornobyl NPP accident with the aim
of solution of various scientific and practical problems in the field of radiation medicine,
radiation hygiene, radiobiology and radiation epidemiology. The RCRM is a WHO
Collaboration Centre for Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance
Network (REMPAN). The RCRM research activities cover radiation biology, pathology and
epidemiology. Data of human studies include: the early and late radiation effects of the
acute radiation syndrome; radiation cataracts; immune function and cytogenetics after
radiation exposure; non-cancer effects including circulation diseases (cardiovascular,
cerebrovascular etc.) after low-dose exposure; cognitive function after low-dose exposure;
brain damage in utero; immune, endocrine and nervous system interaction after low-dose
irradiation; non-cancer somatic disease after low-dose irradiation; congenital effects and
hereditary diseases; leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndrome; radiation protection,
dosimetry and hygiene.
