The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest Institution of Higher Education in
Greece and SE Europe. A total of 96,000 students attend undergraduate and postgraduate
programs, while the teaching and research staff number over 2,250 people. More than 1,300
national, European and international research projects are being carried out in various
sectors, including natural sciences, engineering and the humanities. The School of Biology,
the largest in the country, is active in genetics, molecular biology, botany, zoology and
ecology.
Within the Department of Genetics, Development & Molecular Biology, the
Laboratory of General Biology is responsible for much of the bioinformatics research and
training within the Department and the School. The main activities of the Laboratory involve
the genetics of model organisms, the molecular biology of heat shock response,
computational biology and comparative genomics. Professor Z.G. Scouras is the director of
the Laboratory, with Prof. C.A. Ouzounis as adjunct faculty.
