Contribution to CEREBRAD

In the frame of the CERBRAD project, NRIRR investigates low dose induced changes at the blood-brain barrier by focusing on morphological alterations leading to permeability disorders as well as molecular and cellular alterations serving as possible markers for early damage. Phenotypical alterations at the endothelial cell level are also investigated. A special interest for the group concerns low dose induced mitochondrial alterations in the brain and changes in the activity of enzymes of the respiratory chain. Preliminary data indicate that well measurable mitochondrial and blood-brain barrier disorders can be detected even at late time points after irradiation.
